Mexican Mule

This Mexican Mule recipe combines tequila, fresh lime juice, and spicy ginger beer for a bold spin on the classic that’s done in just 2 minutes. It’s one of the easiest tequila cocktails you can make!

Mexican mule

Here’s one of the simplest, most refreshing tequila drinks of them all: the Mexican mule! This drink is bold, it’s bubbly, and it’s ready in just 2 minutes.

In my opinion, this tequila-based spin on the Moscow Mule might be even better than the classic. The way the bite of the tequila combines with spicy ginger beer and zingy lime makes it bright, punchy and more complex than you’d expect. Like other mules, it’s so simple to whip up by building it in the glass: no cocktail shaker required!

Ingredients You Need

The Mexican mule is a tequila-based spin on the Moscow mule, a classic cocktail from the 1940’s. The mule is actually part of a family of cocktails called bucks, cocktails that are made with ginger ale or ginger beer, citrus juice, and liquor. So a Moscow mule is a vodka buck, and a Mexican mule is a tequila buck! The ingredients in a Mexican mule are:

  • Tequila: I like quality blanco (silver) tequila, which keeps the flavor clean, but a reposado works if you want a richer, more complex drink. For a smoky spin, check out my Mezcal Mule which adds mezcal along with tequila.
  • Fresh lime juice: Always use a fresh lime; bottled doesn’t taste nearly as fresh.
  • Ginger beer: Use a quality ginger beer; I like using ginger beer sold in cans to preserve the bubbles. See my notes below on my favorite brands!

Ginger Beer vs. Ginger Ale: Does It Matter?

Yes, and significantly. Ginger ale is sweeter and milder; ginger beer is made to produce a more intense ginger flavor with real spice. For a Mexican Mule, you want ginger beer.

My favorite ginger beer brands are Fever-Tree and Q Ginger Beer, which have quality, real ginger flavor. For all the drinks you can make with ginger beer, see my Top Ginger Beer Cocktails.

How to Make a Mexican Mule

The Mexican mule is one of the easiest cocktails you can make! Because you want to preserve the carbonation of the ginger beer, you don’t want to use a cocktail shaker. Here’s all you have to do to make a Mexican mule (or jump right to the recipe):

  1. Pour the tequila, lime juice, and ginger beer into a copper mug or serving glass of your choice.
  2. Add ice cubes, and garnish with lime. It’s that easy!

Best Tequila for a Mexican Mule

I usually like a blanco tequila for this cocktail: it’s unaged, so you get a clean, bright flavor that pairs well with ginger and lime. Some of my favorites are EspolĂ²n Blanco, El Tesoro Blanco, PatrĂ³n Silver, or Casamigos.

For a buying guide, check out my full breakdown of the Best Tequila for Margaritas: they woudl all work well here.

Why Use a Copper Mug?

There’s actually a reason that mules are served in copper mugs: beyond just aesthetics! Copper takes on the temperature of your drink almost instantly, so the outside of the mug becomes ice cold. It makes a uniquely refreshing sip you can’t replicate in a regular glass.

But if you don’t have one, a lowball glass, a Ball jar, or a mug of any kind all work perfectly well. The drink tastes just as good.

After years of making mules in regular glasses, Alex and I finally splurged on a proper set of copper mugs, and they’re definitely worth it! They make a great gift, too.

ou can use them for any type of drink, and they make great gifts, too. Here’s a link to some copper mugs on Amazon.

Serving Suggestions

The Mexican mule is bold, bubbly and zingy. Here are my favorite ways to serve it:

  • Summer Patio Parties: Alex and I like to set up a mule bar with different ginger beers and garnish options.
  • Mexican Food Pairings: It pairs well with shrimp tacos, black bean tacos, or any dish with bold, spicy flavors.
  • Happy Hour Alternative: When I want other than the classic margarita pitcher, this is my go-to choice.
  • Brunch Cocktails: Surprisingly great with Mexican-inspired breakfast dishes like breakfast tacos or migas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between a Mexican Mule and a Moscow Mule?

Both mules share the base of ginger beer and lime juice. However, a Mexican Mule swaps the traditional vodka in a Moscow Mule for tequila, adding a smoky and spicy note.

What can I add for extra flavor?

A muddled jalapeno slice or a splash of jalapeno-infused tequila can add a delicious spicy kick.

What’s the best way to garnish a Mexican Mule?

A lime wedge is the classic garnish. You can also add a sprig of mint or a slice of jalapeno for extra visual appeal and a touch of spice.

Can I make a pitcher of Mexican Mules?

You can batch the tequila and lime juice ahead of time, but I’d add the ginger beer individually to each glass right before serving to preserve the bubbles.
